Dom Zeferino and village cooking
Footage from the RTP archive with the Cortiço's founder, cured sausages, clay dishes and cast-iron pots.
Home / Our story
A restaurant with more than half a century of history, in the heart of Viseu's Old Town.
Dom Zeferino, who founded the Cortiço, travelled through the villages of the region in search of their cooking. He recorded customs and traditions and listened to the old recipes the elders still kept by word of mouth. Those gatherings gave us the dishes that are on our menu every day: bacalhau podre, feijocas à maneira da criada do Sr. Abade, rojões com morcela como fazem nas aldeias, vitelinha na púcara à lavrador de Cavernães, miminhos à João Padeiro, cabrito à Pastor da Serra and arroz de carqueija.
In 1995, Serafim Silva arrived at the Cortiço. Today he is the one who welcomes guests at the door and keeps the house true to its old recipes.
Many guests already treat the Cortiço as their home. They come from all over Portugal and abroad, and the restaurant features in many travel guides. Over the years we have received several awards, which we proudly display next to the many messages our friends leave on our walls.
We are in the heart of Viseu's Old Town. Our neighbours are the Cathedral, the Grão Vasco Museum, the Casa do Miradouro, the Casa do Adro and, even closer, the statue of King Duarte.
